Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use this to look up the right Content-Type for a file extension?

Yes. The table is searchable by extension, MIME type, and description, so typing something like json, webp, or woff2 quickly surfaces the mapped type shown by this tool.

When I click a MIME row, does it copy the extension or the MIME type?

It copies the MIME type value, not the extension. Clicking the .json row copies application/json, and clicking .svg copies image/svg+xml.

Why does this tool show only one MIME type for some extensions?

Because the page uses a fixed built-in mapping and presents one representative type per row. It is useful for common cases, but it is not an exhaustive registry of every vendor-specific or legacy alias.

Can I narrow the list to images, fonts, or documents only?

Yes. The category dropdown is populated from the tool's built-in categories, so you can filter the table to groups like Image, Font, Document, Data, or Code.

Why can't I find a rare extension I expected to be there?

This is a curated table, not a live lookup against the full IANA database. If an extension is not in the hardcoded mimeRows list, search will return no matches.
